2010 ARLENE TEXTAQUEEN: SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT
EXHIBITION IMAGES
Yes, I wear a superhero costume. I thought I needed to be someone…why not a superhero?
Arlene Textaqueen
Arlene TextaQueen is Australia’s felt-tip super-heroine. After re-discovered her childhood devotion to her felt tip
marker medium, she has dedicated herself to drawing nude portraits for more than a decade. Her “Textanudes” are
marker portraits created in an intimate and collaborative exchange between herself and the women she chooses to
draw. In a location of her subject’s desire, they together choose accessories, props and poses that reflect their
character
Social Engagement continues this artistic journey, introducing a new group of quirky femmes. The exhibition of 11 works, includes provocative titles such as I can tell if I start I won’t be able to stop and As soon as I came on stage he knew exactly what my bedroom smelt like. These techni-coloured nudes, resplendent in tattoos, fantasy headwear and fur coats grace bedrooms, studios and even the Sydney Harbour foreshore.
