2009 ALEXANDER SETON: ASSEMBLY
EXHIBITION IMAGES
The T-shirt is a particular manifestation of the fashion of young male adulthood. Self expression through graphics, logos, statements political or otherwise. This declarative style of self definition possesses the humour and sadness of rereading an old diary. The carved marble shirts suggest the discomfort with the open public honesty of the age of Facebook and such social media.
Alexander Seton
2008
Alexander Seton’s practice has earned a growing reputation based upon producing carved marble and synthetic stone sculptures that play on optical illusion and the perception of surface. The work uses the tension and often contradiction between the traditional skill of carving and use of contemporary subject matter and concerns. In his first SSFA solo show, Assembly, Seton presents a series of T-Shirts, folded and hanging on stainless steel hangers, laboriously carved from marble with graphite, watercolour and resin inlay.
Seton is a Sydney based artist who graduated of the College of Fine Arts, UNSW in 1998. He has exhibited in numerous sculpture exhibitions over the years, including Sculpture by the Sea four times since 2002, the McClelland Sculpture Survey 05, The Helen Lempriere Sculpture Award 06, New Social Commentaries 06. Seton has participated in international sculpture symposiums such as the 2007 Hanyu International Sculpture Cup, in Shenzhen in China. His work has been acquired by numerous private and public collections throughout Australia and overseas including Newcastle Region Art Gallery, University of Queensland Art Museum, Balnaves Foundation Collection, AGNSW Society Member’s Collection and The Danish Royal Art Collection.
