10 - 29 October - I Want To Carve a Future, Devour Everything and Become Something
Call it youth bravado, wishful thinking, psychological examination or ego – I Want To Carve a Future, Devour Everything and Become Something, is the statement made when you’re at the bottom of everything – and upon waking one morning, decide it’s time to turn things around. Darren Sylvester, Melbourne, 2006.
Photography and video are the pre-eminent forms in contemporary art and Darren Sylvester is among the leaders of a cool style thats also - and perhaps a little perversely - brimming in emotional impact. "Sylvester's highly staged, seductive large colour photographs tap into residues of emotion within consumer culture," observes Daniel Palmer, critic and lecturer in art theory at Monash University. "Their derivation from the artist's short stories and unusual way of seeing the world gives them a freshness a lot of contemporary photography doesn't have, making Sylvester stand out among the new generation of photo-artists."
