In May, Sullivan+Strumpf Fine Art will be exhibiting major paintings from the Stain series, spanning from 1973 – 1979. These grand-scale works, which identify Ball as one of the great colourists, come from the artist’s own collection. Many of these works have never been seen by Sydney audiences.

"Spanning all the recent paintings is Ball’s capacity to integrate his natural instinct as a painter, letting the colour obey a gravational fall within the canvas, with a sophisticated knowingness about the roots of his inspiration. He stands like any sophisticated painter in the full knowledge of his immediate past and yet retains the right instinct to let painting follow its inherent drive to be painterly. The effect is that his close knowledge and appreciation of the immediate past does not lead to arch and “composed” works. The paintings declare his sensibility – educated in the lessons of the masters – and his feeling."
