2005: THERESE HOWARD

EXHIBITION IMAGES

Bronze casting is a fascinating and engaging process. I've been enmeshed with this technique for almost ten years now and still find the transformation remarkable. The tradition of bronze casting (Lost Wax) is centuries old. As a technique, it is labour intensive and time consuming - a single piece may take days or weeks to complete depending on its complexity, but I find it's ultimately worth the effort. Traditionally bronze is polished or a patina is applied, however, my interest is more with it's contemporary potential and the irony of the painted surface.

All the works produced for this show refer in some way to a particular period or discussion within the history of art. Whether it's the work of 17th century Dutch painters, traditional bronze masters, the perceived hierarchial nature of fine art, or to issue of cultural heritage. (Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan provided the inspiration for the Aussie themed Waltzing Maurizio). Therese Howard, Perth 2005.
