Obarzanek, Simon

Simon Obarzanek, born in Israel 1968, is a Melbourne based photographer. He completed a Bachelor of Photography at RMIT University in 1989, and from 1995-2001 lived and worked in New York.

Obarzanek’s photographic practice deviates from the traditions of portraiture to explore the physicality of the human body. Un-impeded by the use of digital manipulation, his series of un-conventional portraits place the notion of individuality into quandary and anonymity. The work ultimately conveys an overriding sense of a universally shared human condition that is expressed through the human form.

Obarzanek has significantly been the subject of a major solo survey exhibition, Simon Obarzanek, Monash Gallery of Art, Melbourne (2008). He was notably exhibited in the group exhibition Order and Disorder: Archives and Photography, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2008/2009). Obarzanek has been the recipient of a number of awards and prizes, and was recently selected to participate in the Turner Galleries Artist in Residence program, Perth, 2010.
